Can't connect after fresh install

P

Pete N Leanne

I just performed a fresh install of xp on an Acer Notebook 4000 (damaged
recovery partition). All seemed well until attempting to connect to the
internet. Error message says it cannot obtain TCP/IP settings. I've tried
disabling/enabling; uninstalling/reinstalling ethernet controller etc
w/devmgr to no avail. Anybody know how to overcome this annoyance?
(currently running on my desktop - vista)

Does it work by cable? If not, is the correct network adapter driver
installed?

it's connected to a cable modem
i've downloaded the drivers (to cdrom w/my vista machine) as per Acer's
website, installed with the wizard and still no connection.
the only icon in network connections is "1394 Connection 2" (the network
adapter) says it's connected and when i attempt a driver install w/device
manager, it will not find a suitable driver, selecting from list, as i can't
connect to search the web on the xp machine.
I've performed this task on desktop units in the past with no probs, so i am
quite bamboozled

Did you install *all* the drivers from Acer site specific to your model,
specifically chip set?

That's the firewire card. If you do not see the NIC listed, you do not
have the drivers installed.

use another system and go to the Acer site with the all the details of your
system (service tag if it has one). Get the various NIC drivers for that
model and try them. Wrong drivers won't install.

This is not an unusual problem.

I'm assuming they are all the correct drivers, unles Acer is in the habit
of providing bogus driver packages as the one i downloaded was for an Acer
Notebook 4000 running xphome

Tried that - no dice (no NIC or ethernet controller listed - unless they're
in the LAN driver folders) maybe uninstall ALL drivers except the 'chipset'?

I can't tell from this thread what you've attempted but I'll pass along what
I'd do if I was confronting this issue. I can't guarantee it will work but
seeing as how you're still working on this problem 24 hours after installing
XP it may be worth a shot.

First, go to Acer's web site http://support.acer.com/drivers_download.aspx.
Follow the prompts until you arrive at the listing of drivers available for
your laptop.
Download the Lan driver.
You should end up downloading a zip file named
Lan_Broadcom_7.97.0.0_XPX86.zip.
Extract the driver files from the zip file to a handy location. There'll be
three files, b57win32.cat, b57win32.inf, and b57xp32.sys.

You've got a couple of options as to how you proceed from here. You could go
to Control Panel and run the Add Hardware wizard. Me personally, I prefer to
work through Device Manager, Start -> Run -> devmgmt.msc. Hopefully you'll
find an entry with a exclamation point next to it. Odds are it's your
network adapter. Right click on it and select Update Driver from the menu.
In the Update Hardware Wizard, pass on searching online for a driver. You
want to point the wizard to the files you downloaded. Make the appropriate
choices and you should end up being able to hit the Have Disk button and
selecting the .inf file for your Ethernet card.

If you tried the Device Manager route and there aren't any items listed with
exclamation points then you'll have to try using the Add Hardware wizard.

Good luck

That is the site i downloaded the drivers from, for the specific
make/model,etc, but there is NO network controller (ethernet controller)
drivers anywhere aon the acer site, this is why i'm posting to the group.

all that's left with the infamous yellow? are as follows;
?Mass Storage Controller
?Network Controller

On that site I clicked on Notebook -> Ferrari -> Ferrari 4000 and ended up
with a long list of drivers for your laptop. Here's the one listed under the
LAN category.

http://global-download.acer.com/GDF...77&Step1=Notebook&Step2=Ferrari&Step3=Ferrari
4000&OS=X01&LC=en&BC=Acer&SC=PA_7

That should be the one for your Network Controller. You might also want to
download the Chipset and Modem drivers to get rid of those other question
marks.

Chipset driver.

http://global-download.acer.com/GDF...77&Step1=Notebook&Step2=Ferrari&Step3=Ferrari
4000&OS=X01&LC=en&BC=Acer&SC=PA_7

There are two modems listed on that web site. The driver for your modem
should be one of these.

4000&OS=X01&LC=en&BC=Acer&SC=PA_7
