Can't Uninstall an Application

I have windows XP-SP3 and want to uninstall a program so I can
reinstall a new version. The program is in 'add/remove' but when I
try to uninstall it, I get a message that the file "uninstall.log does
not exist or is not valid". Windows will not uninstall the ap! Is
there another way to uninstall programs when Windows uninstall won't?

I don't think it's pertinent but the program I am trying to uninstall
is 'Quicktime'. There is nothing on their support site that offers
any help.

been deleted . Install QT over the top of the install , and then
uninstall it .

Usual cause of this type of problem is using disk cleanup tools - the
installer uses the installation log file to do the uninstall - and that's
deleted by a lot of cleanup tools (including XP's own utility)

Nope. Uninstall.log was originally in Windows\system32\Quicktime.
(that's where Windows uninstall looked for it). I verified that the
file was not there. From Google, I have found that others with this
problem could not install a new QT over the existing one. I have not
tried that yet but I believe an uninstall is required first.

If so, you must do this the long way viz.

I don't feel comfortable editing the registry. I was hoping to find
reference here to some kind of a utility to uninstall programs that
Windows can't because of corrupt or missing files.
