Can't turn on automatic updates

In windows security center, it says that the automatic updates are set to
notify me of new updates, and it reccommends to turn on automatic updates.
But when I click on "turn on automatic updates," it says that windows was
unable to turn them on. And when i try to configure them manually, all of the
options are grayed out. I'm on an administrator account and i am using
windows xp home edition service pack 2. Somebody help!

Try choosing to not enable automatic updates. Reboot. Now try choosing to
enable the automatic update service. See if this helps.

It already has "disable automatic updates" selected, the other option is
"Turn on automatic updates (reccomended)," both are grayed out.

See if the following helps you out.

Edit the registry at these locations:

[HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU]
and, if present
[HKCU\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU]
Delete "AUOptions" and "NoAutoUpdate"
