AvariceRising
OS: WinXP SP2 Version 5.1 (Build 2600.xpsp_sp2-gdr.050301-1519:Service Pack
2)
Symptoms:
Windows Security Center Icon Tray Icon is yellow and reports "Downloading
Updates: 1%" for last 2 days...
Automatic Update will not open from the control panel
Windows Security Center shows Automatic Updates "Check Settings" and
clicking on the [Turn on Automatic Updates] button leaves the Security
Center window frozen...
Actions:
Automatic Update was set to notify me when downloads were available. Friday
2/16/07 it listed 5 and I told it to download them then put the computer
into shutdown (for when it finished download and install). The machine may
have been manually shutdown (power button) during the update install - I
lacked the time to babysit it during shutdown and another family member was
hot to get their email... (we need more computers!)
Remedies Tried:
This morning I researched and did the MSKB Article 914226 procedure (stop
AutoUpdate and BITS services, unregister wuweb.dll & iuctl.dll and rename
them and iuengine.dll then restart) with no change in the status.
Request for Help:
Thanks in advance for any arrows to better MSKB articles or your own
procedures/experience to fix this annoyance.

if you remove the at. and @bogus.)
