Automatic Updates

Microsoft "encourages" automatic updating [for example, a little icon (which
cannot be deleted) appears next to the clock UNLESS I update]. I know that I
MUST do security updates at least twice per week -- I do a security update
every day.

I had automatic updates turned on, but there were problems:

1. most updates did not apply to me, yet all were downloaded and
INSTALLED;

2. descriptions were not given -- only that the updates were security
updates;

3. I mentioned that the programs were automatically installed (not just
downloaded); and

4. There is no way I can delete the icon -- it remains even when I
reboot my computer.

Is there a way to resolve the security updating problems?

Thank you,

I would suggest that you change your update settings to "notify but dont
download"
the little icon will come up as notifier.........but you go to the update
website thru IE7 and do a manual scan and then you decide what to download
and update.
After this is done the icon will disappear.

Uhhh ... MS normally releases security updates once a month, on the
second Tuesday of the month. So checking for updates daily would appear
to be wasteful.
