Can't start or reinstall explorer

I couldn't get explorer to start. I am using win2000 and explorer 6.

I was getting the error message: Application error iexplore.exe -
Application failed to initialize.

After looking through this newsgroup, I scanned for viruses and spyware and
came up with nothing. I uninstalled though the control panel and reinstalled
explorer. Now, I can't even get the explorer icon to show up.

I am on the internet presently using firefox but I really need explorer.

I'm at wits end. Any suggestions short of wiping out my operating system and
starting over?
