Can't set up an email account

T

Trevor

I am getting the following message when I click on Tools>Account settings in
Outlook 2007 (I got the same in Outlook 2003)

The operation failed because of a registry or installation problem. Restart
Outlook and try again. If the problem persists, reinstall.

From looking for help I find I have to create a profile, however when I go
to control panel>mail and press the email accounts button it depress's but
nothing happens.

Following these instreuctions:
1.. go to Control Panel-> Mail-> button Show Profiles.
If you are using a 64-bit edition of Windows;
go to Control Panel-> Additional Options-> View 32-bit Control Panel
Items-> Mail-> button Show Profiles.
2.. press the button Add.
a.. Do NOT use Copy. even if you want to recreate your mail profile or
you'll end up copying the corruption as well
b.. Do NOT delete your old profile, even when it is corrupted, before
you verified that the new one works. You might want to lookup some account
settings afterwards
3.. Enter a name for your profile
4.. Select to add a new mail account
5.. Make sure you choose the correct account type. Ask your ISP or
administrator if you do not know this.
In Outlook 2007 you can simply type your desired display name, email
address and password and Outlook will try to determine and configure your
account automatically. If this fails you can still choose to configure it
manually with the information provided by your ISP.
6.. Follow on-screen instructions to (further) configure your account.
Again; Ask your ISP or administrator if you do not know these details

I'm guessing that after entering a name I then highlight it and select
properties and then press the email accounts button? However nothing
happens.

In Outlook, a data file is a personal folders file, commonly a .pst.

I still have no idea how to get Outlook (2007) working. Do I need to get
hold of a .pst from another computer?

I don't know if I want to add a profile - there is one there called Outlook
and I just would like to get Outlook working as my email client rather than
OE.

But there very well could be something wrong with the one that's there.
That's why I said to try a new one. You don't have to delete the one that
exists. Just add a new one.

Look in the Help Files, of all things. Search for "add profile"...

OK I created a New Profile called New Profile when I started outlook I
selected it.

When I open Outlook I still get ' The operation failed because of a
registy or installation problem.

Then I thinlk you'll need to uninstall Office, clean out the Office registry
settings, and reinstall it.
