Can't Set Up A Printer Share

D

Diane Hopkins

I have been trying, unsuccessfully I might add, to set up a printer share so
my daughter can use the one Printer we have that still works. (Dell,
actually Lexmark, Photo Printer 720). I have DSL access through Qwest and
use a Linksys Router BEFSR41 v2, for my Ethernet cable access. What am I
doing wrong? The printer is attached to my computer Win XP Pro via the USB
port. The only time I can see my daughter's computer is when I go into the
setup panel of the Router.

Can some expert out there give me some help or point me in the right link
for a step by step article? Thank you.

You need to make sure that file and print sharing is enabled on the computer
that will share the printer. Also the Windows Firewall or other software
firewall on that computer can block access to any shares. You can use the
ping command to establish basic network connectivity between your computers
at the command prompt such as "ping mycomputer" or "ping xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx".
Below is an example of a successful ping. The links below should help get
you started.

FYI a workgroup has nothing to do with network connectivity or security
boundaries. It is used only for convenience of network browsing of network
resources as seen in My Network Places.
