cant see installation

I recently was given an XP media edition computer to fix because of inherent
booting problems. When I went to do a repair with the setup disc, all it
showed me was a partion but no mention of an operating system. In addition,
recovery console won't let me in due to a password which I know this system
didn't have..but somehow has created one, silly as it sounds. I'm more
concerned of the absence of the mention of an operating system during setup.
It does start to boot and then it gives me the windows xp logo ..and then
the screen goes black indefinitely. I know that there is an OS because there
are windows files, documents and settings files, program files, etc on this
HD. Is there a fix for this? TIA

Can you boot to Safe Mode?

(Kind of interested why you cross-posted to the accessibility newsgroup.
Does someone involved have issues with vision, or perhaps other
usability issues? Microsoft has made a commitment to help users with
accessibility issues.)
