Can't see emails in Windows Mail Pane

R

Russ

I have a new Dell computer with Vista Home Premium--my first experience with
Vista. I have transferred (I believe successfully) my email settings and
email files from my old machine (Windows XP, Outlook Express) to the new
machine (Windows Mail). There are two panes; the left one contains the
folder tree, and appears to be correct, including the total number of
messages and number of read messages in each folder. The right pane, which
should contain columns of information for each of the messages, is blank. No
messages, no headers.
I have confirmed that all the folders and all the emails are stored in
c:\Users\Russ\AppData\.... And I can read them by double clicking on the
..eml files. However nothing appears in the right pane in Windows Mail.
The column headers are also missing. I can add them by checking the
appropriate boxes in View--> Columns.... But if I close out Windows Mail and
reopen it, the headers disappear and the boxes in View-->Columns... are
unchecked.
Any ideas?

Did you import the files into Windows Mail, instead of just copying them
into place?

I would guess that the top edge of the Preview Pane has been dragged too
high. What if you click View | Layout and uncheck the Preview Pane?

Sounds like something is interfering with writes to the registry.
Are you running any third party security software? As a test,
uninstall that, reboot and try Windows Mail again.

Hmm, McAfee??

I used Windows Easy Transfer, using CDs to transfer the settings & emails. I
think it imported the data automatically when I opened WM, but it's been a
long day and a half and I'm beginning to doubt what I remember! (I had other
issues with trying to get the transfer done--the CD approach worked. I had
problems trying to use the LAN and the 4GB memory stick).

BTW, right-clicking on the individual folders & selecting Properties gives
the correct number of messages. The messages themselves just don't show.
Maybe it is a registry problem, or a corrupted .dll file, but I'm just wild
guessing, & I still wouldn't know what to do about it.

Most versions of the McAfee antivirus software cause assorted problems
in Windows Mail, although seldom immediately. So do most versions of
the Norton software, and a recent version of the Trend software. These
have to be uninstalled, not just disabled, to stop them from creating new
problems. The McAfee software also needs a cleanup program to handle
part of what the uninstall didn't:

Sometimes you even have to remove your email account under Windows
Mail, then create it again, to finish the cleanup.

If this fixes your problem, you may want to install a replacement
antivirus program. I recommend either avast! or AVG, either one
with a custom install that tells it to leave out the part that scans
email.

have you checked the VIEW setting to make sure it is set to VIEW ALL.

PROBLEM SOLVED! It turned out to be McAfee AntiVirus. I uninstalled it and
replaced it with AVG. As soon as I uninstalled McAfee, Windows Mail
straightened up and did everything it was supposed to do. Thanks--you and
Gary VanderHolen had the right idea.

Thank you for confirming once again what us regular responders here
are well aware of. McAfee and Norton antivirus products are just not
compatible with Windows Mail.
