Viewing Pane in Windows Mail

When I open any one of my folders is there a way to NOT have the contents of
the first e-mail listed displayed in the Preview Pane automatically? I know
that if I click to the far right of the e-mail list the Preview Pane will be
empty and a message will show that says "There is no message selected."
Ultimately this is what I would like to see when I open any of my folders.

One of the following would help :
1. View > Hide Read Messages
2. Open a sub-folder under Storage folder, drag/drop the read messages there
3. Delete them after they are read.

Thanks, but I want to be able to see the basic list of the e-mails, with the
Preview Pane showing, just that I would like NOT TO SEE the actual content of
ANY e-mail in the list unless I actually select it. I am also aware that I
can reduce the Preview Pane to the bottom of my screen which would then show
a full screen of e-mails, but then I may as well turn off the Preview Pane.
Not what I was hoping to do.

Perhaps, Message Rules is the option you need.
Tools > Message rules > Mail. Select the rules there.

Nope, that still doesn't address the issue of the PREVIEW PANE displaying the
CONTENTS of the first e-mail listed in the folder I have selected. Besides I
can't use Message Rules due to the fact that I have Bitdefender Anti-Virus
running on my system. Bitdefender has issues with VISTA and Windows Mail. I
am currently traveling that path as well.

Thanks

This is the default behaviour in WM, it was bugged repeatedly during the
beta testing of Vista WM, reported back as by design - won't fix!!

Many regard this as a regression because this automatic opening of a message
did not occur in Outlook Express.

Putting the 'Preview' button on the top toolbar and using this to quickly
toggle the view prior to switching folders is the only work around.

The preview pane will always open available messages. That is the nature
of the beast. :)
You can customize the toolbar to add a Preview button, enabling you to
toggle the preview pane on and off.

That's what I thought.

Thanks for the info, I kinda thought this was a "normal" operation of WM. Too
bad....So Sad. Nothing like regression in this day and age.

I failed to scroll all the way to the bottom of your response,
thereby missing the fact that you had already provided the same
information. I seem to have an aversion to scrolling... ;-)
