Windows mail folder pane

The folder list is no longer displayed in the left hand pane in Windows Mail
(apart from Local folders, Inbox and Newsgroups). In order to navigate to my
other folders, I have to click on Local Folders, when they are displayed in
the message pane. I can then open any folder but cannot transfer files to
the folder from the inbox.

You should see a small triangular arrowhead on the left, next to each group
of folders?
Click that to expand the hidden folders.

If I click the arrowhead next to 'Local Folders', all I can see is my Inbox.
Clicking on the Inbox opens it in the right pane. There are NO other folders
visible in the left hand pane, apart from this newsgroup and I have to click
on 'Local Folders' to see them, but in the right hand message pane. These
are displayed expanded and I can't close the expansion view, and I can't add
new mail references to any of the folders, or transfer messages between
folders

Very unusual?

Could you try enabling the Folder Bar @ view menu>layout.
And also disable the Folder list at the same time, then apply/OK.

Clicking on the folder name should show all other folders below.
What shows when you click on the Folder Bar?

Have you tried a restart of the machine since this problem arose?

Get WMUtil from http://www.oehelp.com/WMUtil/Default.aspx

Read the instructions.

Run WMUtil with WM closed, this might correct any corruption to the message
store?

My folder list has mysteriously reappeared this evening, although I lose
connection with Windows Mail many times daily and have to restart. Internet
Explorer is not affected, but I can't receive or send emails until I restart
(about 20 times a day on average)

Sounds like your antivirus is seriously messing with your mail program.
Which antivirus are you running? Some of them cause problems with
Windows Mail over time.

Email scanning in any antivirus must be disabled, for
reasons explained here:
http://thundercloud.net/infoave/tutorials/email-scanning/index.htm

If turning off the email scanning function does not resolve your problem,
do a trial uninstall of your antivirus. If no improvement, you can
always reinstall it. Instead of uninstalling your antivirus, consider
upgrading to Windows Live Mail, because it is less prone to
suffering bad effects from overly aggressive antivirus programs.
