Nothing in Preview Pane

I'm running Vista 64 with AVG. Without explanation I can no longer view the
preview pane ain Windows Mail and emails are coming as .htm. I cannot
forward these emails as they are stripped and being sent to
C:\Users\Ownewr|Desktop|___.htm

The preview pane is missing, or is it there but empty?
If the former: View, Layout, Show preview pane.

If the latter, what happens when you send an email to yourself?
As a test, uninstall AVG to see if Windows Mail works without it.
When you reinstall AVG, select 'custom' install, which then allows
you to unselect installing its troublesome email scanning module.
