Can't paste to notepad

Hello Group:

Windows XP/sp2
Suddenly I can't copy/paste a .txt file from anywhere to notepad. I
can paste it to wordpad, but not notepad.
"Paste" is greyed out on the notepad menubar. CTRL-V doesn't paste it
either.
Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

You can't paste a file into notepad. You should be able to paste copied
text. It is a text editor, period. Text is the only input type that Notepad
accepts. Wordpad can accept the pasting of objects (a file, a picture),
Notepad cannot.

Notepad will only handle pain text, Wordpad can handle some formatted
text features, such as bold, italics, etc. What you are copying is not
plain text. Try the PureText utility from here:

I apologize for mis-reading your post. Sharon F is correct, you cannot
copy a file directly into notepad. If it is a really a .txt file just
open the file with Notepad.

Thanks for all replies. It is now obvious that I was trying to paste
files. Early morning stupidity and fatigue.
