Can't open thumbnails in "Windows Picture & Fax Viewer".

When I go to "My Pictures" I have several folders with different sets of
photos in. Normally to view the pictures I double click a folder which brings
up the "thumbnails" of the pictures, then to view a particular photo I double
click it and it opens in the "Windows Picture & Fax Viewer". But this one
folder I have doesn't allow me to do that......I have no idea what I've done
to it. I double click the folder to bring up the "thumbnails" of the photos
in it, then I double click a picture I want to see and the "Windows Picture &
Fax Viewer" comes up saying "no preview available". What have I done ? The
"thumbnails" of the pictures (which are .jpeg format) are viewable but not
the full scale size of them. Can anyone please help ?
