Need help-my pictures' thumbnails dont show suddenly

Some, but not all, of my photo files I have in my photo folders display no
thumbnail when in thumbnail view, and when double clicked, there is 'no
preview available' in the picture and fax viewer. Everything was working
fine, then I moved around files, and now, many, but not all, of my pictures
wont come up within my files. When I try to load the picture in Photoshop, a
blank, white picture comes up. There is no data to it!

I don't quite know what "move around files" means.
First thing I would look at is that you have the correct extension after the
file name.
Look at the file name of a file that will not open and give us the full file
name and extension, something like:
filename.jpg
so we have some idea about what is happening.
Or, look at the file names in Details view and tell us what you see under
the column header "Type". It should be something like "JPEG Image". Do you
see something else? Tell us.

I will try to be more specific. I have hundreds (GB's) of jpeg photo files,
each around 1-2MB in size. (I am a serious photographer). When moving some
of the photos to another file, an error message displayed saying windows
cannot move the selected files because the name was too long. Yes, I use long
names, but I have never had trouble with this before, except when burnin
CD's, and I have to retitle. At the time, I didnt know I could select all,
right click on the first, and rename it, so instead of trying to rename the
files I wanted moved, I moved all the other photos out, and then renamed the
folder, and rearanged my photos. Now, even though in thumbnail view and
details view, I can still see my pictures, I cannot access or edit any of
them. The thumbnail view shows blank white, I cannot open the file in
photoshop or any other program, and my recently downloaded Picassa program
(thanks for suggesting this-its amazing) does not recognize that these
particular jpeg files exist. when I try to rename them collectively, windows
explorer stops responding, and I have to end the program. if I try to right
click and rename just one photo, the rename option doesnt show up on the
menue. Defragmenting my disk did not help. I have successfully renamed 2 of
the many photos files after repeated explorer shutdowns, and these 2 are now
fine, but I can't spend hours trying and restarting explorer over and over. I
cant even delete the files if I try, though I can delete the folder they are
in. I have never had this problem before-thank you for your help.
Sincerely, '

FYI, a typical filename is "Summer 2005 Western Travels to Vancouver Island
and Washington State.jpg"

One more thing- though in the details view, the file sizes are displayed (eg.
1.7 MB), when multiple photos are selected I and right click and go to
properties, it shows 0 files that take up 0KB of space. Its like the picture
somehow got separated from its data.

Three things.

1.When in Details view, look under the column header "File type". What do
you see there? JPEG image for each photo file or simply File.
2. How much RAM memory do you have? It should be a number like 256, 512,
etc.
3. Long shot, but try the following, it cannot hurt:
Click on Start, click on Run and type the following in the opening textbox:
REGSVR32 SHIMGVW.DLL
and press the Enter key. This will take a second to run and you should
receive a "success" message.
Note that in the above, there is a space between ...32 and SHI...
Then try opening a file after running this.

Thanks for your continued help. It wouldnt be a big deal, except I failed to
ever backup these particular photos. but in answer to your suggesstions,
yes, in details view is says "jpeg image". I have 1GB of RAM, so thats not an
issue. Third, I ran the .dll file thingy you suggested, but this did not
change anything unfortunately, and Explorer still becomes unresponsive when I
try to rename the files. Thanks for your continued help. If no solution can
be found, its not the end of the world! I will just delete the darn files,
and just have to go back to Vancouver Island!
