Can't make Local Area Connection

I have just built a Pentium 4 computer off an ASUS motherboard, something I
have done many times before and I use XP-Pro.
TRY as I my with every combination of responses in network setup, I cannot
get this machine to set up a Local Area Connection so I can put it on the
Internet. Can anyone Help?

Here, DSL drops into a switch, and as usual, each machine plugs into it.
This computer is also and I get link lights on both ends of the cable. This
machine is part of Workgroup HOME.

This seems to be more difficult with wizards than it used to be.

can anyone help me get this machine on the net?





My DSL connection drops into a switch. Other computers plug into that
switch.
