Cant login to XP Home?

For some reason my version of XP Home for my Compaq laptop
dosn't bring up the box to click on to enable me to log in.

I can press ctrl-alt-del but I dont know what the password
is.

What can I do besides reinstalling windows. Is this a know
fault for XP?

Boot to safe mode and log in as the administrator,
the password may be blank so just hit enter.
When you get in go to control panel/user accounts
and set/remove a password.
