Cant get to Safe Mode

Recently - we had a storm that surged thru the VGA card and destroyed the
motherboard. anyway, another motherboard was installed - and of course it
came with a cd - and i had realtek speakers/media - so i loaded the realtek
devises - well windows had an update to the realtek driver that i downloaded
- - realtek rtl8139x/ pci fast ethernet controller. This driver is not
allowing me to get to windows - I am unable to get to safemode to uninstall
the driver - it wants a boot system -cdI so how do i bypass this boot?

I was going to do a restore from the emergency cd,unfortunately - the place
i bought the computer loaded the computer with windows xp home edition - and
gave me a 98 windows emergency cd - the business is now gone.

And to make matters worse, when the motherboard was done, and before i
downloaded this driver - i was able to get into windows - but unable to do a
restore.

currently, the sceen shows
(intel undi pxe-2.0 build 082
for realtek rtl8139z/8130/8180x pci fast ethernet controller v2.14 c0402091
pxe-e61.media test failure check cable pxe-mof exiting pxe rom reboot and
select proper reboot device or boot media device and press a )
any key i touch give me the same message. i can get into set up, but none
of those options help me. help help - my daughter wants her computer back.

In case you can't get the directions from Start, Help;

To start the computer in safe mode
1.. You should print these instructions before continuing. They
will not be available after you shut your computer down in step 2.
2.. Click Start, click Shut Down, and then, in the drop-down list,
click Shut down.
3.. In the Shut Down Windows dialog box, click Restart, and then
click OK.
4.. When you see the message Please select the operating system to
start, press F8.
5.. Use the arrow keys to highlight the appropriate safe mode
option, and then press ENTER.
6.. If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot system, choose the
installation that you need to access using the arrow keys, and then
press ENTER.
Hope this helps.

F2?
That sounds like the BIOS entry key - not the SAFE MODE menu selection...
(F8).

Turn off the computer.
Turn on the computrer and immediately press the F8 key once per second.
When the menu comes up - select Safe Mode.

If the menu does not come up - you may have a repair installation situation
and you may have a problem since you have no Windows Xp Home Edition
installation media per your original posting.

(Do you even have the Product Key/COA for Windows XP Home Edition?)

First off, to get to safe mode
you need to hit the F8 key right after the bios message
but just before the OS loads

If you can get there, fine, you might be able to sort out the problem

However, unless the mobo you bought is the same type (or very similar) to
the original...
more than likely you will need to perform a repair installation

Based on what you are describing it sounds like the network card has a
higher boot priority than the hddisk. First make sure the hddisk is
connected properly and that it shows up in the BIOS. If the hddisk does
show up properly in the BIOS then check the boot priority for the network
card and change it to the last item and/or move the hddisk above the
network card in boot priority. Save and exit the BIOS and see if you can
get back into Windows.
