slow comp since error

a few months ago, I had an error where my computer wouldn't boot properly. I
was able to somehow get Windows (XP pro) to respond after much restarting,
but at one point had this message:

<windows root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe
please reinstall a copy of the above file.

I didn't have my XP disk on me at the time, and was able to restart instead
from the last known good configuration. Ever since then, my computer has
booted and works, but is extremely slow during booting and with no open
applications will occassionally have CPU usage at 100% on an svchost.exe
process, making it so I can't do anything. It always seems to eventually calm
down, but I'd love to get it back to normal running time again, and wonder if
I have a problem with Windows and need to do a repair installation or system
restore.

(The original error message that would repeat when I first had an error was:
Intel UNDI PXE 2.0 (build 082)
copyright 1997-2000 Intel Corporation
For Realtek RTL8139(x)/8130/810x PCI Fast Ethernet Controller v2.13(020326)
PXE-E61:Media test failure, check cable
PXE-M0F:Exiting PXE ROM)

I'd appreciate any advice/help.

Thanks,

Did you check or replace the cable?

Check the Application and System logs in Event Viewer for Warning /
Error Reports fo a single session. Please do not post copies of
Information Reports.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308427/en-us

Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you
should double click for further information. You can copy using copy
and paste. Often the link will, however, say there is no further
information.

(Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes only)

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event Viewer.
Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of the
message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from Event
Viewer.
