Can't Get Past Windows Logon Screen

F

Frank

WindowXP Home on HP Laptop

Windows boots through "LOGO" screen where I would usually
log in. However, now logon "names" do not appear. Just
sits at logon screen. Tried booting in safe mode....
same different logon screen but same problem.

Only thing I can do is power off by holding the "on" key
or place system in hibernation by hitting correct keys.

Critical data on lap top. I beleive hard disk OK based
on symptoms.... but how do I get to it???

Did try creating a bootable floppy from other XP system
and booting from floppy of affected machine. However
looks like this "sub-system" of XP would let me access C:
drive.

PLEASE HELP!!!!

Hello Frank,

From the description it sounds like there may be driver issues on the
system. You might want to Pres F8 (as in booting to Safe Mode) and select
"Last Known Good" from the list of options. This will boot the system using
the configuration of the last time that the system was successfully booted.
If you installed hardware or software prior to the issue you might want to
uninstall it and check for newer drivers before installing again.

Thank You
