can't get past "loading personal settings"

I am trying to connect two computers remotely that are both running xp pro. When I set-up the server I make sure I have the correct ip address and the server is on the internet. I then get on the internet with the client and connect to the server. The first thing it aske me for is name and password. I then get a message that other users are logged onto to server and will be locked out if I continue. So I hit ok to continue. After that I get a blue scree and a box with the message "loading personal settings" after about 5 minutes I get a picture in the right hand corner that the connection was lost. I have contacted the person in front of the server to find out what happened. They are telling me that the computer went back to there user loggin screen. What am I doing wrong. Does the server need to be locked in some way after they go on the internet.

Are you using an account and password which has been used before on this
machine?

You might try having someone log on locally to the "server" machine using
the same username and password you are using to come in remotely--just to
get the profile established and be sure everything is working right.

Then they can go back to the usual sign-in, and you can try this again.
