Can't get modem to work

R

Rich

Hello,

I have Win-XP with an internal modem. The system recognizes and installs
the modem just fine. Device Manager and diagnostics are good however, the
modem won't dial. Testthe phone line and good dial tone. The strange thing
is that when I run the internet connection setup wizard, I only get the
option for broadband. The option for a modem is disabled (grayed out).
Does anyone know what's going on and how to get around this?

Thanks,
Rich

Go to Control Panel > Phone & Modem Options > Modems (tab) > Properties >
Modem (tab), uncheck "Wait for dial tone before dialing", if it is checked.

On the same Phone & Modem Options, check under the "Dialing Rules" (tab),
click "Edit" on the Edit Location dialog, under General, check to ensure you
are using appropriate area code and country region rules.

As an aside, windows diagnostics will say OK if the basic modem settings
are correct but they will also say OK if your modem was fried by a
surge.

I agree with Plato about Windows saying it's working when your modem
won't dial. With the cost of modems under $25usd, just go buy another
one. Uninstall the first one, slap in the new one, and move on.

Good luck,
