I read the help and to the best of my abilility, I wasn't able to connect to
my friend's PC who is also running the same XP client as I am.

She's with one ISP, I am on another.

Assuming Remote Assistance and Desktop box is ticked. How do I access her
PC? Do I need her IP address? If so, where do I enter it? How does she
give me permission to access her desktop?

Thanks

The person having the problem sends a request through messenger for assistance. You accept the request. You will then be connected to the requesting machine, click take control and the client machine allows or denies the take over.

she has to allow you to access,by email or messenger she
sends you the invitation and the password and you connect
with that password.

Thanks, was that Windows Messenger 4.7 or MS Messenger 6.0?

Windows Messenger. In the Actions area of the toolbar is a Remote Assistance
option.
