Can't fax

Guest

Up until yesterday, we were faxing via a Canon MultiPass system. Yesterday,
I purchased and installed a Brother laser printer. I disconnected and
unistalled the MultiPass.

I have installed the WindowsXP Fax component, and I believe I have
configured it correctly. I have two phone lines. I have connected the phone
line designated as our fax line directly from the phone jack in the wall to
the phone jack in the computer. I can not receive or send faxes with this
set up.

Do I have to have an external "fax machine" or can I receive and send faxes
directly from my computer?

Thanks for your help.

You can send and receive faxes directly from your computer provided it has a
standard Fax modem connected to a regular telephone line. It is also very
important that this modem be listed in the Windows XP Hardware Compatibility
list (http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/hcl/default.mspx) and you have the
latest drivers for it. Unfortunately, Windows XP Fax has proven to be
incompatible with many common modems and drivers, particularly older ones,
even if the manufacturers claim they are "compatible" with Windows XP. Modem
incompatibility is not apparent during installation or the initial setup. It
only becomes apparent when you first try to send or receive a fax. The Fax
Service will dial or will answer an incoming fax but then fail with any of a
number of unhelpful error messages such as "Line is busy," "There is no
answer," or "Reception error." There will be nothing in Event Viewer to
give a clue as to where the problem might lie.

What exactly happens when you try to use Fax?

My modem device is listed as GTWV.92.

I have reinstalled the fax console, and it sent a fax that had been sitting
in my outbox. I created the fax this afternoon, and it just went to my
outbox and did nothing. When the fax sent, I could hear the dial tone and
dialing sound.

While we were eating dinner, we could hear a phone ringing and we assumed it
was the fax line. When I came back to the computer there was a message that
an attempt to receive a fax failed, but I am not sure why. Maybe the call
was not from a fax machine, but from a telemarketer. I am going to have my
husband try to fax me tomorrow from work.

Any ideas.

would you know if windowsxp has an "answering machine" built in software.
I figured out how to receive and send faxes. But, I can't receive voice
messages yet.

As Russ has already written below, XP can't. WinFax Pro does, however, have
an answering machine component built-in. If you don't have WinFax Pro, it's
not a cheap program (street price is around $90), although if you watch the
ads, they offer pretty good rebates occasionally. Maybe you'll get lucky
this weekend, with all the sales going on.
