Faxing with cable modem

I've just learned that XP has fax capabilities. I'd like to use my home phone
number to receive & send faxes. My isp is cable (& wireless.) Is it possible
to send/receive faxes sent to/from my current home phone number using my
cable modem? Do I have to plug my laptop into a wall jack/phone line? If the
laptop isn't connected to a phone line while someone is sending me a fax,
will I be able to receive the fax later on when I plug the computer into a
phone line again? Is there anyone out there from "planet xp fax" that knows
what I'm talking about?
Thanks!! Joan

That's what I do to send faxes. The phone cord goes from the wall to the
PC and then to the phone. (The PC has a phone-in plug and a phone-out
plug. It's a desktop, not a laptop.) In fact, I just sent a fax using
"Windows Fax."

It's possible to receive faxes the same way. When I had two phone lines,
that's what I did. If you have only one phone line, the problem is: who
answers, the fax modem or a person? You'd have to tell people "phone me
before faxing and I'll set up fax receiving" or something like that. It's
a nuisance unless only real close friends send you faxes.

So for receiving I use eFax (www.efax.com). It's a free service that
provides your own fax number (probably in a remote area code) and
forwards the incoming faxes to your email account. [No law says you have
to use the same number for receiving as sending. ;-) ]

... If the laptop isn't connected to a

again?

No. But if you use eFax (or a similar service) you'll get the fax when
you read email.

What is an analogue modem? So I have to a cable connection and a telephone
connection to use the cable modem for faxes on XP?
