can't exit messenger

I have an older version of msn messenger and I am trying to update it,
however when I try to exit the messenger I am told other applications are
using it. My internet explorer, outlook express and all other programs are
closed. Have scanned for viruses and adware/spyware and I have none. Also
checked task manager and see no other programs running. Any ideas?
