Messenger Service

?

-----------------

I have an XP Pro pc. Occasionally I use messenger to chat with friends.
Most times I don't log into it.

I have noticed that if I go into Internet Explorer, click the mail icon,
then click read news, messenger starts up and shows me as logged in. I have
tried to shut it down and it give a message "There are other applications
currently using features provided by Windows Messenger. You must close
these applications before you can exit Windows Messenger. These
applications may include Outlook, Outlook Express, MSN Explorer and Internet
Explorer"

I end up making my status as appear offline.

A couple of questions:

1. Why does outlook express as a newsreader require messenger service?
2. Is there any way to prevent messenger from coming up when I go into the
newsreader?

Thank you

You might want to try the following:

Open Outlook Express.
Click on the Tools menu in the Toolbar at the top of the
window.
From the Tools menu, select Options.
On the General page, remove the check mark from the box next to
"Automatically log on to Windows Messenger".
Next, go to View and select Layout from the menu.
Remove the check mark from the box next to Contacts.
Note: That will prevent Contacts from being displayed in the
lower left corner of OE. Sorry, but you can't have that showing
if you don't want Messenger to start.
Finally, close Outlook Express.
The next time you launch OE, Windows Messenger should not start
automatically.
