Hello everybody,

The following pbm occurs on my brand new laptop. Not a major issue, but...

If I launch Windows Messenger, then close it down, a small icon remains on
the right hand side of the task bar.

If I right-click on it to exit, I get the following message, which indicates
I cannot close Windows Messenger.

It says something like"Other applications such as Outlook, IE, MSN Explorer,
Outlook Express are presently using some functionnalities provided by
Windows messenger. You must close these applications in order to be able to
close down Windows messenger"
(this is a lousy translation of the French version).

Now, none of these applications is running.

What should I do ? What's happening, what should I check and correct ?

Anyone ?

Many thanks in advance for your kind help.
Best regards,
Daniel

It sounds like you're describing MSN Messenger, not Windows Messenger. What
does Help>About say?

Hello PA Bear,
That was quick § Thank you so much.

No, I am defenitely referring to Windows Messenger, V4.7.

Any idea ?

THks,
Daniel

Do you use Windows Messenger? You can Remove or Uninstall it:

http://kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_messenger.htm

Windows Messenger will be tied in to any ,NET Passport-related application
or page (e.g., MSN9). Have you visited Windows Update since getting the
laptop, Daniel? Have you recently?

You might post to this Windows Messenger-specific newsgroup (to which I'm
xposting this reply):

Hi,

do as PA Bear says, you should get rid of windows messenger. If your going
to use a messeging program then install MSN messenger.

Hi Jeff,

Many thks for your message.
Indeed, I will do what you both suggest, i e get rid of it and install MSN
Messenger.

Best regards,
Daniel

Many thks for your time and patience, PA Bear.

Indeed, since I got the Laptop I visited Windows Update and downloaded many
upgrades, but NOT SP2.
I think I will remove Windows Messenger.

Best regards,
Daniel

Hello again, PA Bear,

I visited the NG u indicated in your previous message, and there I found a
clue.

There was in fact a conflict with Norton AV. I went to Options and clear the
check-box "Windows messenger".

It now seems to be working.
Tks again for your precious help.

Hi,

Your welcome. Where I work at, I manually removed windows messenger off of
128 computers and off of my 3 personal computers. As for SP2, I suggest you
use the SP2 blocker patch that MS has, so you can keep getting windows
updates without it trying to just give you SP2. Since you have been reading
the newsgroups, then you you also know about how to properly prepare your
computer prior to installing SP2. I hope you will follow all the
suggestions, it does make a difference for a successfull install.

Jeff

Tks again Jeff, for your good advice.

This is really a great NG.
Brgds,
Daniel

They may have *been* running and left a flag set; check Outlook
Express's Tools - Options and uncheck 'Automatically logon to Messenger'
and in its View - Layout, uncheck 'Contacts'. Both involve Messenger.
Outlook might also have a similar Contacts, IE nothing I know of, MSN
Explorer is something I just would not have around anyway

When you install SP2, Windows Messenger will be installed again, so keep
that info handy! <wink>
