Cant connect to 192.168.1.1

I am trying to set up my parents laptop to connect to the internet. I am
using my old router which is a Zyxel Prestige 623R-T1. With everything
installed, the laptop acknowledges that it is connected so dont think my
problem is with the router. By the way their laptop has Windows xp home
edition. My problem starts when I try to go into 192.168.1.1 to enter
details that they were given from their service provider. I have tried
resetting router, turning it on and off, re-installing drivers etc. I have
also checked the IP address : IP Address: 192.168.1.33
Subnet Mask:
255.255.255.0
Default Gateway:
192.168.1.1
After entering in username and password, and after a very long wait I get
the following message: Protected Object. This object on the RomPager server
is protected.
Would appreciate any ideas as I cant think of anything else to try.

I would try two things:

first, do a _HARD_ reset of the router, w/ the recessed red button on the
back of it. That should reset it back to the factory defaults, which
should then correspond w/ the user manual/quick-start guide that came with
it. This step is really optional, it's just "to make sure" things are at
their default. It can't really hurt since you're doing an initial install
(it will forget all passwords and WEP/WPA keys, so you'll have to set them
back up).

second, from what you posted, it _SHOULD_ be at 192.168.1.1, the fact that
you can't access it indicates that you may be running some sort of
"content protection" or "child protection" software that is denying
permission to that "site". you'll need to reconfigure that or turn it off
to get into the router. I know that MSN for example has that "feature", so
if you installed the MSN client it may be "protecting" you from going
there (even when using another browser). You could try adding 192.168.1.1
to IE's Trusted Site List, but I doubt it's quite that simple.

Googling for "RomPager" reveals it's a web server for embedded devices
(ie, your router), so I gather that you did get thru to the router
partially and it's reporting back that error; again, a hard reset may cure
this. Once you do get into it, you might want to check the firmware
version and upgrade it if an update is available from the makers web site;
as always, be very careful when burning new firmware into a device, make
sure the power is clean during the operation (a UPS would be wise). DONT
do it during a thunderstorm!

Good Luck

Thanks for the reply frodo. I had already tried pressing the reset button on
the router and that didnt work. I had also tried turning off the firewall,
with no success either. I have just tried turning off all security and
adding 192.168.1.1 into trusted sites list and that also does nothing. There
are two security programs on the comp that I know of: Norton antivirus and
the Windows one. Is it possible for there to be more on the comp that
wouldnt be apparent?
One thing I have noticed is that the DSL light is no longer on. I am nearly
positive that it had been on at some stage. Would that be because of
reseting the router.
My parents are now considering getting a router from their service provider,
but if the problem is with getting into that site then I think they will
still have the same problem. Do all routers use that same site?
I would be really grateful if you might have some more ideas that I could try.

resetting router could mess up the dsl, yes, because the router may need
to know the username/password for the dsl line - that should be covered in
the service provider's setup literature [re: PPoE]. [some isp's just use
the router default, some actually assign unique customer names]. [some
isp's DO require a specific router FIRMWARE version to work w/ their
setups, and they warn you not to go to the router maker and just download
the latest version, but to always get the version that they offer at their
site instead; Comcast is this way for example].

And you're right, to config the PPoE acct info you need to get into the
router! I would try the router on another machine, just to verify that
you can get into it via the default ip address and admin username/
password, as discussed in the router's quick setup guide. You're dead in
the water til you confirm that the router's config web page is accessable.

If you can access it via the other machine then it's definately the first
machine's fault. While you have it on the other machine you could try to
set up the dsl username and password too, so that when you move it back it
may connect again for you (connecting but not able to access the config is
better than not connecting!). While in there config as much as you can.

Oh, I just thought of something else - are you trying to get into it via
wireless, or a wired connection to the PC? Most routers do not allow
config-access via the wireless, but only via a wired connection [until you
get in there and enable wireless config access]. This is a security
feature to make sure only a pc IN THE HOUSE can change things.

Finally, try it from safe mode, perhaps that'll not load whatever it is
that's interfering. Turning off norton etc is certainly worth a try to.
Also, try a different browser, like firefox or mozilla.

Good Luck

Oh, I misspoke a bit: it's Verizon (Fiber) that warns of requiring a
specific router firmware version to work w/ their system, not ComCast.
ComCast is straight generic (at least around here).
