Can't burn mpeg2 to DVD-R

Probably not the place for this, wondering if anyone has the same problem,
or knows the answer straight out.

Using one of three DVD applications I have, I am converting avi files to
mpeg2 and making movie disks. In all three aplications, when I use DVD+R,
there is no problem. However, every time in every application, when I use
DVD-R, I get some kind of error during the process; from 'Insert Blank
Media' to 'The Burn Process has Failed.'

The three applications are:

Nero Vision Express
Sonic My DVD LE
Win DVD Creator

I've heard something somewhere about applications conflicting, or problems
with packet writing applications.... but I have no idea.

Thanks.

What brand/model is your burner?

Can't believe I forgot that!

Pioneer DVR-110

It's supposed to do:
CD-R
CD-RW
DVD-RAM
DVD-R
DVD-RW
DVD+R
DVD+RW
DVD-R-DL
DVD+R-DL

Win XP Pro SP2
Direct X 9.0c
All up dates.

BTW, This happens on two identically configured machines.

Then there is something wrong with the laser which writes DVD-R/RW disks.
Each type uses a different wavelength.

I can burn DVD-R data disks no problem. In fact I back all my data up to
DVD-R because of the cost difference. I don't know about other places, but
here in Japan, there's 35-40% price difference between DVD-R and DVD+R
disks.

So, buth burners will write data to DVD-R, but not mpeg2 from DVD software.

Sorry, I must not have read your prior posts correctly. If you can write
every other type of file to DVD-R, then there must be something different
about the format or size of the mpeg2.
