Hello,

You can use Nero (not free, but may have been included with your CD writer)
to burn a VCD of the video file to play on your DVD player.

Open a new project of a VCD, drag your AVI file in and Nero will re-encode
the file (resulting in some quality loss, especially for DVD quality like
video). Note that this way, it is limited to approx 75 minutes of video per
CD-R disc. Also, VCD quality is comparable to that of VHS.

Some DVD players support direct playing of AVI files from the disc, but even
then, it only supports certain codecs like DivX and XviD.
