can't burn CDs anymore

Last year and up until about 10 days ago I burned over 200 cds using XP with
SP2 for most if not all of the time. To burn I used mostly WMP, both 9 and
10, but also used Record Now on occasion without problems. I have both a
Yamaha CD-RW2300EZ drive and a Sony DVD-RW (510) drive and both of them
worked. Now lately I can't burn anything. I get error message 0XC00D11AB
telling me the data isn't being transferred fast enough or some such excuse
but with all my past success this must be incorrect.

I've been looking on the internet for people having similar problems and
found a couple of similar sounding situations but the suggestions for fixes
haven't worked. For example, if I click on My Computer and then right-click
on either of my drives and then click Properties I'm supposed to see a
Recording tab but it isn't there. Evidently XP isn't recognizing either
drive as being capable of burning. So, per a Microsoft support document
(316529), I used Regedit and went to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\CD
Burning\Drives and changed the Drive Type values from 1 to 2 on both drives.
This did not help.

I don't know if this is just a coincidence or not but I thought I would use
a restore point from a couple of weeks ago but now Restore won't work and it
always did before.

Could a recent XP update be the culprit? I know I can uninstall any of them
but is that wise? I just want to be able to burn CDs again.

Thanks for any help.

Try rt clicking MyComputer>select Properties>Hardware>Device
Manager>Dvd/Cdrom Drives>your drives. Rt click on
each one and choose Uninstall. Restart and let WinXP reinstall them.

Rich,

I followed your suggestions but nothing changed.

Note: I tried burning a CD and it failed again shortly after beginning the
burn. I put the CD back in the player just to see if anything was recorded
and there was 3 seconds of music. So, if XP doesn't recognize the drive as a
burner then how did anything get burned?

Have you tried updating the firmware on your CD Burner? It seems that
the manufacturers of the newer CDs are recommending that you upgrade
the firmware and, in my case, it helped tremendously. You might have
trouble with your Yamaha drive as Yamaha no longer supports CD drives
but you might be able to find a firmware upgrade at:

<http://www.yamaha.co.jp/english/product/computer/index.html>

Check here for your Sony burner:

Good Luck,

John,

John,

Thanks for the advice but I have the latest firmware for both drives.

What confuses me is why did both drives stop working at the same time after
working so well for so long? And, as I noted previously, since there was 3
seconds of music recorded before the recording operation stopped, I'm
beginning to think the error message may be correct about the speed issue.
I'm going to follow that thought.

Here's a wild hypothesis: copy protection software run amuck

I've read numerous stories in the last year about software products
(including some music CDs and DVDs) that install software on your PC
that tries to prevent you from burning copies of it. It's supposed to
only prevent you from copying their particular products, but has been
known to greatly interfere with CD/DVD burning in general. It can cause
burning to fail, or even cause windows to think your burner isn't a burner.

I recently found this stuff on my XP computer after installing a game in
the "myst" family.

Don't know how to tell you how to find this or rid yourself of it. :-/
