cd drive no longer reads blank cds, unable to burn!

my cd drive still reads stuff-- music cds, data, whatever-- but when i put a
blank disc in, if i click on d:, it says D: is inaccessible. illegal
function. this message appears when a blank cd is in the drive; when nothing
is in the drive, it says to insert a disc.

related, it used to be the case that the 'video tasks' menu at the left side
of explorer when a folder with a video file is open would have the option
'burn to disk'. now that option has disappeared!

Check the properties of the CD Burner drive and click on the recording tab. If the check
mark to enable recording is checked, uncheck it and hit apply and then recheck it and hit
apply.

If that doesn't work see:

For whatever reason, you don't mention the manufacturer of your
computer nor of the DVD Drive...

I do know that HP released a firmware update for a UJ-832 DVD Drive on
Jan 11, 2007 to fix the problem: "Fixes issue where the DVD/RW Drive
does not recognize certain blank high-speed media."

If you have a HP computer, visit the HP site and click on "Software and
Driver Downloads". If you don't have a HP, then find the
manufacturer/model of your CD/DVD drive and visit the manufacturer's
website for firmware upgrades to your drive.

ack, i think i spoke too soon. the drive is still not recognizing blank cds
as such. its possibly a problem with the cds but i doubt it. is there a way
to fix this by hardware?

Apparently you did not look at the right spot on the website.
The following is a link to driver/firmware downloads to several of
their storage media devices. Find your drive and update the driver:

thank you for the reply. i flashed the drivers as instructed, and after
re-installing the hardware and going through the process of setting it as a
type 2 drive in the regedit, i'm still at the same point where i was. i can
get as far as having the media i'm trying to burn appear in the d:/ as
temporary, ready-to-burn files; as well, i can click "burn these files to
disk"; from there, however, when i click on 'next', it says, 'please insert a
blank disc', just as before. i have the blank disc properly in the drive. all
other cds work correctly, only blanks are not even being spun in the tray. it
used to be the case that when a blank was inserted, a new D:/ window would
appear, and it would say '100%' empty, 700mb remaining. i'd really like to
see that message again. is there nothing else to try? feels like i've done it
all..

i'll add this: when a blank cd is in, and i right-click on properties, it
shows "Free space 0 bytes used space 0 bytes, type: cd drive file system: RAW
.... i think it used to say BENQ5232 or something speicific, not just generic
'CD drive'...

nope, this is definitely a problem with XP. i just exchanged the cd drive. i
have the exact same problem with this one. so its not the discs, its not the
cd drive.

if its a registry error, it must be different than the one on that page,
since none of its listed symptoms apply in this case.
what do i look for in the event viewer? there are 1000's of entries over the
last month.
