Can't Access Hotmail - Suspect SP 2

G

Guest

I have not been able to access hotmail from my computer for an extended
period of time. It has recently been suggested that SP 2 could have
something to do with this. I installed SP 2, but then uninstalled it because
I was not happy with my computer's performance. However, in looking in my
add/remove programs, there are STILL some Windows XP Hotfix (SP2) Qxxxxxx
programs installed. Could this be the reason for the hotmail issues? The
message I get when trying to access hotmail is: The .NET Passport service is
currently unavailable at this Web site for one of these reasons: The site
may contain an error or be experiencing a problem that affects the .NET
Passport service. The site may not be an official .NET
Passport-participating site..... etc. etc. I know hotmail is functioning,
because I can access from another computer in my home. HELP!!!!

Hotmail (free) can now only be accessed through the web interface. Access
through Outlook Express is no longer supported.

I'm not accessing it through Outlook Express. I'm directly logging in
through hotmail.com, just as I always have.

You may have to relax the privacy setting in Internet explorer. Set it
to no higher than Medium High.

Those hotfixes are not part of the SP2 upgrade installation. Those are
patches for SP1. The SP2 labeling indicated they were going to be
included in SP2. Those were already on your system when you installed
SP2 and when you uninstalled it, they appeared again. It's not likely
they are the cause of your problem.

Thanks for the suggestion. I've done all that. I've cleaned the cache,
reset privacy settings, security settings, etc. My actual question was
about what appears to be "leftovers" from SP 2, still installed. Could this
be the problem? And why are they still installed?

Thanks Rock. But..... now what? ***sigh***

Not quite correct!
<quote> As many as 18 million Hotmail subscribers will be weaned Monday
[27 Sept-04] from a free service that lets them export e-mail to another
mail client, under Microsoft MSN's new spam-fighting plan.

Hotmail, the Internet portal's Web-based e-mail service, has long
offered subscribers the ability to use a technology standard known as
Web DAV
(Web distributed authoring and versioning) to download e-mail from
Hotmail into Microsoft Outlook and Outlook Express for free.

Starting Monday, MSN will grant use of Web DAV tools only to paid
subscribers of Hotmail, which starts at $19.95. However, Hotmail
subscribers who have previously used the technology, an estimated 5
percent to 10 percent of its total 187 million customers, will be able
to continue to use it for free through March or April of 2005. </quote>

Make certain your time, date, and time /zone/ settings are correct.

IE6 SP2 Tools>Internet Options>Privacy>Sites> type in

hotmail.com

(passport.net)

Temporarily disable your firewall, any "system" tools (NSW, NIS, anything by
Norton or McAfee) and pop-up/ad blockers to see if they're interfering.

IE Tools>Internet Options>Advanced>HTTP 1.1>toggle between the two options.

IE Tools>Internet Options>Security>[zone]>Custom Level>User
Authentication>Logon>toggle between all settings here except 'Automatic
logon only in intranet zone'.

Resetting either or both of the above Tabs to the defaults might help, too.

THANK YOU!!! The cookie handling did the trick. I still suspect that SP 2
somehow left some not-so-nice settings. This is the second time I've had to
reset some settings, after uninstalling SP 2. In any event, I'm a happy
camper, and don't have to race between computers to access different email
accounts. My frustrations have vanished!!! Thanks again.
