Canon S9000 Graphic print quality sucks on large-format paper

I am trying to print an Adobe Illustrator file on my Canon S9000. When
I print on 8.5x11 paper, the prints are lovely. I am using plain
paper, nothing fancy, but it's plenty sharp enough to suit me. (my
design contains small text and thin lines.) Then, when I switch to
8.5x14 or 11x17, the print quality looks terrible - totally pixelated.
I have adjusted every possible print setting, and re-installed the
drivers. I don't know what to do.
