Cannot Uninstall Windows Defender

I've been having the update problem with Windows Defender and had no luck
with Microsoft's fix. I downloaded a new version of Defender but cannot
remove the old one.

When the new installer failed I tried using the Control Panel - Add or
Remove Programs and get the same error "The feature you are trying to use is
on a network resource that is unavailable." It seems to want the original
installer. I searched for the requested "WindowsDefender.msi" but only find
the new installation package which cannot uninstall the old version.

Any suggestions?

As long as you're on XP, and not using Vista where Defender is part of the
OS and should not be uninstalled, you might try the Windows Installer
cleanup utility...
