Uh-Oh. Sounds like a case of the renegade disk cleaner or out of control
finger on that delete key... Anyway, that same sort of thing was reported
going from Beta1 to Beta2, and although we don't generally condone getting
Microsoft code from a third party distributor, the fix would be to
re-install whatever Beta version you're now on and then immediately overlay
it with the Final code from the real Ms site itself. So try this site for
past versions of the installed MSI, particularly notice the area with a
green background for older versions of WD. Let us know if you have success
with that plan.

I understand what started it how. I installed a new hard drive and used the
sofware that came with the drive to copy everything from my old drive. Then
formated the old drive. So as it turns out the copy is far from perfect. will
try your fix and get back to you thanks

Build 1347 came out around 19 April of 2005 looking at the past history in
this newsgroup, and wasn't changed until the Final release on Oct 23.

Scott;

The WindowsDefender.msi file is what filehippo would download to you. It's
best to download and turn off all security products and disconnect from the
net before attempting to upgrade WD rather than run the upgrade in place.

Do you use Ms Office? There is a Microsoft MSI Cleanup utility but...

from Engel:

Windows Installer cleanup tool: read the info carefully before using:

Right, the MSI cleanup utility sometimes has some side effects and should
be
used as a last resort. If you use a version of Microsoft Office which is
covered by Office Update, you should check whether you are able to update
via
that mechanism still.

Hi Scott:

Try this technique; it doesn't require the old WD to be installed. Get rid
of the run registry key for Windows Defender. You can use Spybot (Tools -
System Startup). If Windows Defender shows under Services (you can use
Administrative Tools), stop WD and disable the service. Reboot. Now delete
Windows Defender folder under Program Files. Use Search with Defender as the
file name search argument. You should see several entries for Windows
Defender under Application Data. Delete these entries. Next run Ccleaner
using Issues. This will remove the registry entries. Now Remove the current
signature file. To do this, click Start, click Run, type Msiexec /x
{A5CC2A09-E9D3-49EC-923D-03874BBD4C2C}, and then click OK. Now you should
be able to install Windows Defender. Let me know if you have any problems.
