cannot repair xp for new motherboard

I installed XP Home (retail) a couple of weeks ago. I am now trying to
install a new motherboard and cpu. To be exact I am moving the hard drive,
video card and DVDRW to a new case, motherboard and cpu.

When I try to boot from my XP CD, a message that Windows is checking
hardware appears for a few seconds and the screen then goes blank and remains
that way. I have tried this several times (the last time for 7 hours). A clue
as to state the computer is in is that pressing the power button shuts the
computer off immediately, no 4 second delay.

Any suggestions?
