Cannot re-establish Eudora as my default E-mail program.

Bill

I'm having a strange problem. Last June I initially loaded Eudora
into my new Vista Premium PC. A couple of weeks ago I tried Windows
Mail, but decided I liked Eudora more. So I switched back to Eudora,
but cannot establish it as my default E-mail handler in IE7 again!

I've uninstalled and reinstalled Eudora but that didn't work. I've
been into the "Set Program Access and Computer Defaults", but Eudora
simply isn't there in either the "Custom" or "Non-Windows" programs.
I'm the admin on a 1-user PC, so this isn't the problem. I've run
Eudora by clicking on "Run as administrator", but this doesn't work
even if Eudora tells me it is not the default program and I click to
make it the default. I do know how set an E-mail program as default
in just about any version of Windows, but there seems to be an
incompatability between Vista and Eudora.

This isn't really a big problem, just that a "mailto" on a web page
doesn't work right. This is my only problem with Vista, IE7, and my
E-mail program, so I'm really not too worried about it. But, I would
like to fix it if possible. Can anyone help?

Thanks, Bill

Run the Default Programs applet. Select "Set your default programs."
After the list of programs comes up, click on Eudora to highlight it,
and then click on "Set this program as default."

If that does not fix the problem, you should probably seek help in a
Eudora forum.

Hello Gary, I have run the program "Set your default programs" but
this does not show Eudora.

I have a long thread working in an Eudora news group but nobody has
been able to provide a fix. I posted here because I thought one of
the MVP's might be able to help, but so far no luck.

This was the first thing I tried but it didn't work.

Worth a shot. I know I used to have the one or two incidents of XP
forgetting about my using Pegasus instead of a Microsoft offering, but
so far much luck with Vista remembering. Good luck!

You're not likely to get help from the MVP's because as a rule they don't
use Eudora. This problem appears to be a shortcoming in Eudora in that
it fails to register itself with the Vista OS.

You're right - what I was hoping was that someone could tell me how to
manually change my E-mail default using the Registry Editor.

Sorry, I don't have that information. Registering one's email with the Vista OS
seems to be a complex problem, since several other email clients haven't
mastered it yet, including the popular IncrediMail.

If what you want to change is the mailto protocol,
do a search in regedit, or regedt32. You'll find that
mailto is similar to a file extension. It's listed as a class
under HKCR (CLASSES_ROOT). There you should see
a Shell -> Open -> Command tree, the basic format
used to set up a default "open with" setting. The default
value in the Command key is the path of the program to
handle mailto.

There's also a setting under HKCR\Protocols...., which points
to a key under HKCR\CLSID. The subkey InProcServer32
there has a default value that should also be a path
pointing to whatever handles mailto.

If you're familiar with the Registry, just do the search
and the settings you need to change should be obvious.

As far as other default settings go, I don't know how
they'd apply in an email program. With most file types,
the way it works is that Explorer encounters, say, a .txt
file.... It then looks up HKCR\.txt. The default value there
points to a file "class", which is generally "txtfile" for
..txt. Explorer then goes to HKCR\txtfile and checks
the Shell\Open\Command default value to find out which
program should be executed to open the file. So you could
change the default program for .txt files by either changing
the path in HKCR\txtfile\Shell\Open\Command, or by changing
the default value in the HKCR\.txt key to something other
than txtfile, like maybe Bills Text Program File. You'd then
create a key named HKCR\Bills Text Program File and set
up a key tree there with Shell\Open\Command, with a default
value in the Command key that points to BillsEditor.exe.

With email there isn't really a default file extension,
so the file extension setting may not be relevant.

Bill,

Click "Associate a file type or protocol with a program" in the Default Programs applet, and associate "mailto:" protocol with Eudora. It certainly works fine here.

Ramesh, the problem (as I understand it) is that Eudora is not listed as
an available choice.

Gary,

Bill haven't mentioned anything about "Associate a file type or protocol with a program" section in the Default Programs applet. According to his post,

"I've been into the "Set Program Access and Computer Defaults", but Eudora simply isn't there in either the "Custom" or "Non-Windows" programs."

The same was the case here, but I could associate mailto: protocol with Eudora, via "Associate a file type or protocol with a program", not the "Set Program Access and Computer Defaults".

Bill,

I understand Eudora isn't listed in the "Set Program Access and Computer Defaults" window.

In the "Default Programs" window, click "Associate a file type or protocol with a program"
Select MAILTO in the Protocols list, and then click Change program.

Is Eudora listed in the resulting dialog box?

No, it's not there and there is no way to add it that I can see. Note
that this is a Windows Vista Premium PC - if this was an XP system I
doubt I'd be having this problem.

Which version of Eudora are you using? I tested with the current version in their site and it's listed when I double-click the "mailto:" entry. If you're already using the latest version of Eudora, then I can create a .REG file for you to resolve the problem.

I'm using 7.1.0.9, which is the current version. Note that everything
did work fine until I gave Vista's Windows Mail a test (and made it
the default). Since then, I haven't been able to re-assign Eudora as
the default.

I'd like to try your .REG file, maybe that is what I need. Before you
ask - I have no problem backing up my registry, then recovering the
unmodified registry should there be unforseen problems with the
changes. Actually, I should have done this when I tested Windows
Mail, but how was I to know that this program would cause so many
problems? :(

Thanks!

Bill,

The .REG file is now ready. If you can mail to ramesh (at) mvps (dot) org, I can reply to your mail with the REG attachment.
