Change default email in file folders

I have two versions of Eudora on my PC but only one (Eudora 8 beta) is
recognized in file folders that contain *.jpg files (as of today).
Before today, I would highlight a JPG and click on Email at the top of
the open folder. Eudora 7.1 would come up and all I had to do was put
in an email address. I should say that I use Eudora 7.1 with two sets
of data - one for me and one for my wife. However, my wife's version
would come up which is what I want. As of today, Eudora 8 beta comes
up when I click on Email. I have no idea how the association changed.
I also don't know why my wife's version of Eudora 7.1 used to come up
instead of mine. There must be a way to reset the association. I
tried resetting the association in Internet Explorer - but only Eudora
8 beta is available as a choice. That's another problem. Why isn't
Eudora 7.1 a choice in file associations in Internet Explorer 8? I'm
sure there is a simple solution for both problems.

This isn't a Vista problem. You'd be better off heading here
http://www.eudora.com/ for support.

I hope I explained it correctly - but I think this is definitely a
Vista issue. My Eudora client is running just fine. It's a matter of
Vista knowing which email client to associate to a folder that contains
photos and videos. At the top of the folder are choices like:
Organize, Views, Open, Slide Show, Print, E-mail, Share and Burn. There
has to be a way to associate apps and Open, Slide Show (probably
defaults to Microsoft), E-mail ans Share. I'm sure there are plenty of
people who use more than one email client. So, if they click on
E-mail, how does Vista know which client to use? VISTA.

Michael, I know you're trying to be helpful, but I already explained in
my first post that I've tried that - it's the first place I went.
Please go back and re-read the last three sentences of my first post if
you want to help. I get frustrated when I get a response and:
1. The sender has not understood or completely read my post OR
2. The sender sends an obnoxious reply OR
3. I get a reply that has nothing to do with my request OR
4. The sender tells me I didn't send all the appropriate information
needed to solve the problem. Quite often, how am I supposed to know
what other information could be helpful? If you need more information,
please let me know.....

In this case, I can't think of anything else I could send that would
help anyone solve this issue. I think you should also re-read my
second posting. Please don't just 'skim' what I wrote. Read it in
detail and I think you'll understand my issue.

My bad. You're absolutely right. I did skim your first post. Having said
that, I still think it's a Eudora glitch.

I'm glad you took my comments as constructive. Thank you.

Now, yesterday I tried to figure out a way to add my old version of
Eudora to "Set your default programs" and "Associate a file type or
protocol with a program." There is no option that allows the OP to put
in a path to a specific program. I think that is short sightedness of
Microsoft. I found that, when you install a program, certain
information is placed in the Registry and that's where the above two
protocols I mentioned get their information. For some reson, this used
to work so Eudora 7.1 musy have been in the list of email programs to
choose from. Now, they're not there. Now, I did install Eudora 8 beta
several weeks ago and it's a possibility that that action removed
Eudora 7.1 from the list of available email programs and replaced it
with the new Eudora8 beta. I hate to do it if there's another way, but
I'm thinking I could unnstall Eudora 8 beta and reinstall Eudora 7.1 to
get that information in the Registry. I think that would work. The
only problem is - I WANT to use both versions of Eudora on this PC. The
old version for my wife who is comfortable with version 7.1 and very
computer literate. I want to eventually use version 8 (when I get the
time to import and tweak all my settings and other information. Soooo,
i Know this isn't a problem with Eudora per se, but I think the above
protocols can't have two versions of a program with the same name. I
am also reticent about reinstalling Eudora 7.1 over the existing
version because I might screw something up. Next step is - I look at
Eudora 7.1's eudora.ini file and see if there's something there that
would make that version the default email program. Wish me luck.

By the way, I'm 65 years old and I like your comment at the end of your
postings. Id you're savvy enough, maybe you could still help me now
that I've taken the time to post more detail. Thanks.............

No, we just don't have information that meets your criteria...

You can possibly find the entries in the registry that Eudora 8 set up,
and duplicate them, mutatis mutandis, to add Eudora 7.1 to the Open
With dialog.

The strange thing is: before I installed Eudora 8 beta, Eudora 7.1
would open (with my wife's data) when I clicked on E-mail at the top of
a folder containing JPEG's. I don't want to resort to System Restore
because I don't remember exactly when I installed Eudora 8 beta.

In Administrative Tools choose Reliability and Performance Monitor and
choose MonitoringTools then Reliability Monitor (type Reliability in search
on Start) . This list is a chart of software installs, uninstalls, Windows
updates, and crashes by date. See if your crashes started happening after
you installed or uninstalled something.

Thanks - but I'm not having crashes. I know it's long to read - but if
you think you can help, please re-read all my postings on this thread.

Thanks, but:
1. Should I just Search for Eudora 8 entries in the Registry or can
you tell me where to find the correct entries?
2. What does "mutatis mutandis" mean (I'm pretty rusty with my Latin)?

You're right - I didn't follow your instructions - because I don't want
to screw up the Registry. I don't mind going into the Registry to make
these additions - but I'm afraid to admit that I need some hand holding
on this one. My System Restore is unreliable.

Actually, yours is the best reply I've received so far (I think it has
a good chance of succeeding) - if I do it right.

Thanks. I overlooked your reply because the truth is: I have a
problem with my brain when it comes to focusing. This is real as it is
a medical problem for which I have not yet found a cure. The meds I
take have their good and bad points - but I have trouble concentrating.
That being said, I will go back and try to follow what you recommended.

I'm not going to search the registry for you. For one thing, if I
search for Eudora 8, all I'd find is the entry for my search for Eudora
8 :)

You need to find the entries for 'Open with' and add one for the older
Eudora.

"Mutatis mutandis" means "by changing what is to be changed", i.e.,
making the necessary changes. It can be found in dictionaries, Google,
probably Wikipedia. It is also in my brain, thus the answer I gave :)

I understand what I have to look for but I want to be sure of any changes
I make to the Registry. Specifically, at the top of a folder containing
JPG's, there is a choice (tab) for Emailing whatever is highlighted. I
wish I knew specifically what "Open With" is connected to that specific
tab. It would be great if I could just put in the path to the app I want
to use. But Microsoft won't let you do that. I'll search for "Open
With" and see if it references that tab.

OK, let me know what you find out :)

The above is a (not too subtle) form of confession - I actually don't
know how to do what I'm suggesting. I believe I've done it in the past,
or at least seen the registry entries, but I don't remember how. That's
why I keep pushing the work onto you...
