Cannot ping remote sites

Apologies if this is the wrong group for this question, perhaps someone
can help or point me in the right direction.

I have two Dell computers, a 4600 desktop and an Inspiron 9400 laptop,
both running XP Pro with SP2, both running Norton Firewall (yes, I know,
but it works for me) and for some strange reason I cannot ping IP
addresses from the command prompt on the 4600 desktop.

Well, I can ping my router and other locally connected devices, but not
anything on the internet. I get an error "destination host unreachable"
even though I can connect to any site I want fine. The command works fine
from the laptop, so as far as I can tell it's something specific to the PC
rather than the router config.

I have not done anything that I can think of that has caused this, can
anyone shed any light..? Is it XP, Norton, or what..? Where should I
look..?

Can you ping the same IP address from the other computer? It is not unusual
to not be able to ping internet IP addresses as some will configure their
firewalls to not respond. Try using tracert for the same IP address to see
if you get anything at all. It could also be your Norton Firewall which may
be restricting ping to trusted networks hosts only. Assuming you have other
firewall protection such as an internet router try booting into Safe Mode
with networking to see what happens then. --- Steve
