Cannot open legacy program

Windows updates appears to have changed settings, and now I cannot launch
Photoshop 5.0, which has always worked fine. (It still opens in Safe Mode. )
Tried running Compatibility Wizard, to no avail. The third option for
resolving compatibility issues (GUI) is beyond my expertise.

See this article from Adobe's support site:

Also, have you tried un- and then reinstalling the program?

Presumably, you have tried re-installing it?

I've uninstalled and reinstalled several times, but had to use Photoshop
Uninstall, as Photoshop had disappeared from my Add/Remove Programs list!

It seems that Windows is demanding that I register the software, which is
not necessary as it is not an MS product. Moreover, since it is already
registered with Adobe, Adobe will not allow me to duplicate the registration
(maybe because my version 5.0 is so old?)

This registration problem was confirmed when I went to the Adobe site that
you suggested. When I went into Registry Editor, as it directed, to make a
change, the only option appearing under Software was "Registration".

It appears that some automatic MS update has made a change, and now I need
to find a way to BYPASS this MS snag when I install Photoshop 5.0.
Any suggestions?

I went to the Adobe site that you recommended, and followed the steps.
However, when I went into Registry Editor, I was supposed to do these steps:

# In the Open box, type regedit. Click OK to open the Registry Editor.
# Navigate to the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Adobe\Photoshop
Elements\5.0\common\settings key in the left-hand pane of Registry Editor.

BUT, the registry extended ONLY as far as Adobe Photoshop 5.0/REGISTRATION.
(The "Common/settings" key was not listed; nothing but the REGISTRATION
option was available.)

This leads me to think the problem lies with MS requiring me to register
before install can be completed.
