restore windows XP after HAL update

Hi,

As the last (stupid) move in this year, I have updated the HAL on my PC
(Athlon X2 system) from the already installed and working ACPI multiprocessor
PC to MPS multiprocessor PC. The reason was using the /Timeres parameter of
the MPS hal in order to resolve some programming issue.

Although the MPS hal was displayed in the device manager as a compatible
device, the system does not starts at all. It cannot even be started in safe
mode with command promt, from where the restore could be done. ( I carefully
created a system restore point before the hal driver update)

Now, it is a very bad situation.
Can anyone help me how can I restore the system?

Yes, this is my aim, but I cannot start the system restore tool, because the
system does not start.

Did you tried the Last Good Known working configuration by Tapping the F8
while starting Up?.

Yes, this was my the first trial. Neither safe mode, nor safe mode with
command promt starts. Later I read, it handles only some part of the
problems, which are in the CurrentConfig keys.

John, however, suggested a repair install from the Win XP install CD. Now I
am backing up the content of my drive with "selfimage". And then I will try
the repair install.

points are removed and a new system checkpoint restore point is created after
the in-place upgrade is completed. Do not perform an in-place upgrade if you
may have to use System Restore to restore your computer to a previous state."

So I would need to reinstall all drivers and software...
But there are numerous tools installed.
I would like to avoid this. (if possible)

I think you have little choice. With Windows XP you are not supposed to
be able to install an incompatible HAL but glitches happen and on if you
fiddle with the HAL on occasion you may end up with an incompatible or
corrupt HAL. I know of no other way to repair a corrupt or mismatched
HAL than with an in-place upgrade, you will have to bite the bullet.

Dear John,

You are right.

So finally I tried the repiar install, and it progressed well through the
initial blue setup screen, but after completing the file copy and the
automatic restart, it stops during device installation, at the point where 34
minutes remain. (At this point it should ask for the chipset driver CD - I
tested it with a clean install on another partiton). I could not catch what
is the problem, because the blue screen with the error message appears only
for a tenth of a second.

So the new question is: how can I check what is the error message during the
repair install. And finally how can I overcome on this?

The "hang at 34 minutes" is a well known hardware related issue. When
you install the operating system you should have no external hardware
connected to the computer other than the keyboard, mouse and monitor.
Disconnect all other devices such as printers, USB drives, joysticks,
etc and try installing again. If you have no external devices sometimes
removing, moving to different slots or reseating PCI cards cures the

After executing the repair setup, I could identify the source of the problem.
the "Enhanced Display Driver Helper Service"
It is in the file: c:\windows\inf\oem7.inf

Some more hw parameters:
mobo: ASUS A8N-e (NF4 chipset).
graphic card: NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GS

How can I disable dis device? Somehow it is related to the graphic card.

I tried to remove the problemmatic oem7.inf file, which caused another fatal
error during the setup (missing component). Do you think I can solve this by
removing the graphic card? (or replacing with another?)

I replaced the graphic card with an old S3 Trio 64. (at least it still works
fine
But the problem is the same. Fatal error at 34 minutes.
I should have to disable the ASUS "Enhanced Display Driver Helper Service"
somehow.

I suppose the card itself is not defective.
After the system crash I installed a new Windows XP system to another
partition, and it works fine.
The problem is with the "Enhanced Display Driver Helper Service". It is not
the graphics driver itself, but something related to it (as I remember it was
installed during a driver update as an enhancement). Others have also problem

How can I disable dis device? Somehow it is related to the graphic card.

I tried to remove the problemmatic oem7.inf file, which caused another fatal
error during the setup (missing component). Do you think I can solve this by
removing the graphic card? (or replacing with another?)

The "hang at 34 minutes" is a well known hardware related issue. When
you install the operating system you should have no external hardware
connected to the computer other than the keyboard, mouse and monitor.
Disconnect all other devices such as printers, USB drives, joysticks,
etc and try installing again. If you have no external devices sometimes
removing, moving to different slots or reseating PCI cards cures the

This might be a long shot, I have never tried it halfway through a
Windows installation so I'm not sure if it will work but I think it's
worth a try.

Launch the Recovery Console and see if it can access the Windows
installation in progress. If it can issue the LISTSVC command and see
if it returns anything for the "Enhanced Display Driver Helper Service",
keep in mind that the services name will probably be an abbreviated name
or acronym of sorts. If you can identify the service use the DISABLE
command to disable it.

As I said, I'm not sure how the commands will be handled on an
installation in progress but I think it's worth a shot, this might be a
service set to start that the Windows setup program cannot turn off or
deal with, disabling it via the Recovery Console might do the trick and
allow the installation to continue.

I suppose the card itself is not defective.
After the system crash I installed a new Windows XP system to another
partition, and it works fine.
The problem is with the "Enhanced Display Driver Helper Service". It is not
the graphics driver itself, but something related to it (as I remember it was
installed during a driver update as an enhancement). Others have also problem

Although it seemed a promising idea, finally it did not worked. I could
locate the faulty service within the recovery console: asuskbnt; Enhanced
Display Driver Helper Service.

The repair install, however, stops at the very same point. It seems the
setup re-enables the services, because after the fault I checked the status
of the services again with the recovery console.

It is not enough to disable the service, it should be uninstalled, or removed.
Is it possible somehow?

If you can (could) disable the service in the Recovery Console that
should have taken care of it. Did you follow Nass' advice and check to
see if this thing could be disabled or turned off in the BIOS?

Other than that, if you still have the parallel installation (on your
other partition) you can access the registry of the broken installation
from the working parallel installation and delete the service key(s)
associated with the service, they will/should be in the
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSetnnn\Services branch. You should
remove it from all the ControlSetnnn keys, (ControlSet001,
ControlSet002, ControlSet003...) See here for information on how to

Once again, I have never tried this with an installation in progress so
I can't say if this will work, the only way to find out is try it and
see what happens.

This might be a long shot, I have never tried it halfway through a
Windows installation so I'm not sure if it will work but I think it's
worth a try.

Launch the Recovery Console and see if it can access the Windows
installation in progress. If it can issue the LISTSVC command and see
if it returns anything for the "Enhanced Display Driver Helper Service",
keep in mind that the services name will probably be an abbreviated name
or acronym of sorts. If you can identify the service use the DISABLE
command to disable it.

As I said, I'm not sure how the commands will be handled on an
installation in progress but I think it's worth a shot, this might be a
service set to start that the Windows setup program cannot turn off or
deal with, disabling it via the Recovery Console might do the trick and
allow the installation to continue.

After the system crash I installed a new Windows XP system to another
partition, and it works fine.
The problem is with the "Enhanced Display Driver Helper Service". It is not
the graphics driver itself, but something related to it (as I remember it was
installed during a driver update as an enhancement). Others have also problem

After executing the repair setup, I could identify the source of the problem.
the "Enhanced Display Driver Helper Service"
It is in the file: c:\windows\inf\oem7.inf

Some more hw parameters:
mobo: ASUS A8N-e (NF4 chipset).
graphic card: NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GS

How can I disable dis device? Somehow it is related to the graphic card.

I tried to remove the problemmatic oem7.inf file, which caused another fatal
error during the setup (missing component). Do you think I can solve this by
removing the graphic card? (or replacing with another?)

The "hang at 34 minutes" is a well known hardware related issue. When
you install the operating system you should have no external hardware
connected to the computer other than the keyboard, mouse and monitor.
Disconnect all other devices such as printers, USB drives, joysticks,
etc and try installing again. If you have no external devices sometimes
removing, moving to different slots or reseating PCI cards cures the

It is the Happy End. Finally I could recover the system by removing the
service reference from the system registry file. (Actually I am typing this
reply from this system ) Thank you for the good advices.

Just to mention one thing for the sake of others: I had to retry the
registry modification several times, because the system registry was
refreshed from the system.sav registry file. (It is in the same directory:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\ ) Finally I edited this registry file, and it
worked!

Regarding to the BIOS settings, there is an ACPI setting, but it is set to
Enabled and cannot be changed (it is grayed).

If you can (could) disable the service in the Recovery Console that
should have taken care of it. Did you follow Nass' advice and check to
see if this thing could be disabled or turned off in the BIOS?

Other than that, if you still have the parallel installation (on your
other partition) you can access the registry of the broken installation
from the working parallel installation and delete the service key(s)
associated with the service, they will/should be in the
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSetnnn\Services branch. You should
remove it from all the ControlSetnnn keys, (ControlSet001,
ControlSet002, ControlSet003...) See here for information on how to

Once again, I have never tried this with an installation in progress so
I can't say if this will work, the only way to find out is try it and
see what happens.

Thank you for your support so far.

Although it seemed a promising idea, finally it did not worked. I could
locate the faulty service within the recovery console: asuskbnt; Enhanced
Display Driver Helper Service.

The repair install, however, stops at the very same point. It seems the
setup re-enables the services, because after the fault I checked the status
of the services again with the recovery console.

It is not enough to disable the service, it should be uninstalled, or removed.
Is it possible somehow?

The "hang at 34 minutes" is a well known hardware related issue. When
you install the operating system you should have no external hardware
connected to the computer other than the keyboard, mouse and monitor.
Disconnect all other devices such as printers, USB drives, joysticks,
etc and try installing again. If you have no external devices sometimes
removing, moving to different slots or reseating PCI cards cures the

Dear John,

It is the Happy End. Finally I could recover the system by removing the
service reference from the system registry file. (Actually I am typing this
reply from this system ) Thank you for the good advices.

Just to mention one thing for the sake of others: I had to retry the
registry modification several times, because the system registry was
refreshed from the system.sav registry file. (It is in the same directory:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\ ) Finally I edited this registry file, and it
worked!

Regarding to the BIOS settings, there is an ACPI setting, but it is set to
Enabled and cannot be changed (it is grayed).

If you can (could) disable the service in the Recovery Console that
should have taken care of it. Did you follow Nass' advice and check to
see if this thing could be disabled or turned off in the BIOS?

Other than that, if you still have the parallel installation (on your
other partition) you can access the registry of the broken installation
from the working parallel installation and delete the service key(s)
associated with the service, they will/should be in the
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSetnnn\Services branch. You should
remove it from all the ControlSetnnn keys, (ControlSet001,
ControlSet002, ControlSet003...) See here for information on how to

Once again, I have never tried this with an installation in progress so
I can't say if this will work, the only way to find out is try it and
see what happens.

This might be a long shot, I have never tried it halfway through a
Windows installation so I'm not sure if it will work but I think it's
worth a try.

Launch the Recovery Console and see if it can access the Windows
installation in progress. If it can issue the LISTSVC command and see
if it returns anything for the "Enhanced Display Driver Helper Service",
keep in mind that the services name will probably be an abbreviated name
or acronym of sorts. If you can identify the service use the DISABLE
command to disable it.

As I said, I'm not sure how the commands will be handled on an
installation in progress but I think it's worth a shot, this might be a
service set to start that the Windows setup program cannot turn off or
deal with, disabling it via the Recovery Console might do the trick and
allow the installation to continue.

Well.
After executing the repair setup, I could identify the source of the problem.
the "Enhanced Display Driver Helper Service"
It is in the file: c:\windows\inf\oem7.inf

Some more hw parameters:
mobo: ASUS A8N-e (NF4 chipset).
graphic card: NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GS

How can I disable dis device? Somehow it is related to the graphic card.

I tried to remove the problemmatic oem7.inf file, which caused another fatal
error during the setup (missing component). Do you think I can solve this by
removing the graphic card? (or replacing with another?)
