Cannot load any operating system after attempted install

I have a machine with Windows 2000 loaded onto it, and I attempted a "fresh"
install of XP Home Edition on the only partition that had the available
space. Unfortunately, this was also the partition with Windows 2000 on it,
and it would not let me clear this partition because there were important
"setup files" on it that could not be deleted. I attempted the install on
this partition anyway, and the installation could not be completed and none
of the new files could be copied. Additionally, Windows 2000 can now no
longer boot as there are files missing that are crucial to it. Now I have a
useless machine and new to be able to install XP or I have nothing. The new
XP I want to install is from a recovery disc.

XP wants a partition to itself, so you may have to let the instal
routine reformat that partition. But we do not know whether
a Recovery CD (for unmentioned PC brand) will do this correctly.
