Installed software orriginaly designed for win 95/98 and
received the following message: "Cannot install this VB5
application without the latest service pack. Please
install latest NT service Pack and retry installation. I
am currently running SP1. Before SP1 I recieved a fatal
error when installing this same program. I'm running an
OEM installed XP version on my Dell machine. Is there a
fix for this?

Hi,

Try installing it in compatibility mode (start/all
programs/accessories/program compatibility wizard), but I fear that you may
have an application that will require an upgrade or patch from the program
vendor.

Thank you Rick. I did try all campatibility modes and that
didn't seem to work. I did find however a service pack 3
for Visual Basic 5 on Microsofts web site. This may be my
only hope as Macmillan (the vendor) doesn't support this
product any longer. Their web site isn't even up anymore.
It's a home landscape and design program, one of the best
I've seen. Shame I can't get it to work with XP.

Hi Scott,

Well, worst-comes-to-worst, you can always create dual boot or virtual
machine environment that the program will run under.

VB6 or later will install with no problems on XP. VB5 is a little
too old. Visual Basic .NET is a big improvement on old VB, try that!

Thanks, Rick. How would I go about doing that?

VB5 WILL install in XP; I've ran it and am still running it on XP
boxes with no problem. VB5 programs will also run in XP as well.

Hi Scott,

Which one?

A dual boot for a 9x system when WinXP already exists requires a few tricks,
see:
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/tips/xp_repair_9x.htm

A Virtual PC setup requires additional software.
