I am trying to install Windows XP (SP#) update and receive error messages.

Update title:
Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1

Details:
Size: 10.2 MB

Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1 resolves various issues found
after the initial release of .NET Framework 1.1. These include both security-
and non-security-related issues. After you install this item, you may have to
restart your computer. Once you have installed this item, it cannot be
removed.

More information for this update can be found at
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=867460

The error message I received was:

SL14.tmp - Common Language Runtime Debugging Services

Application has generated an exception that could not be handled.
Process id=0x3a8 (936), Thread id=0x99c (2460).

Click OK to terminate the application.
Click CANCEL to debug the application.

When I clicked OK, the update was not installed, and waited for my next login.

When I tried CANCEL, I received the following The error message:

SL14.tmp - No Deugger Found.

Registered JIT debugger is not available. An attempt to launch a JIT
debugger with the following command resulted in an error code of 0x2 (2).
Please check computer settings.

cordbg.exe !a 0x3a8

Click on Retry to have the process wait while attaching a debugger manually.
Click on CANCEL to abort the JIT debug request.

What can be done to successfully install this update, required by one of the
applications I recently installed?

If this is the only update that fails to install after having installed SP3:

1. Write down what .NET Framework versions are already installed before you
go uninstalling/removing any of them!

How to determine which versions of the .NET Framework are installed and
whether service packs have been applied
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/318785

2. Now see Resolutions Methods 1 or 2 in
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923100 (ignore the title).

If no joy, see this related post by my colleague MowGreen:

Thank you, it wasn't very smooth, but finally I managed to use your advise
and get rid of the error message.
