cannot install printers

I have one Windows XP Pro SP2 system that I cannot install printers on even
when logged in as administrator. System shows 1 printer installed, but
clicking on printer yields message "The 'HP Laserjet 2200 Series PCL 5e'
printer driver is not installed on this computer. Some printer properties
will not be accessible unless you install the printer driver. Do you want to
install the driver now?" Installation fails with Error (2), below regardless
of driver selected.

Printers are HP 2200 (network) and HP4200n (network). I can ping the
printers and run the configuration utility and can print just fine to either
one from other computer systems. I have tried:

(1) downloading manufacturer website driver for XP both by unzipping driver
and running Windows printer installer {see Error (1) below} and by using mfg
installer {see error (2) below} on LPT1, LPT2, and on the network ip port.
(2) using XP built-in driver {see Error (1) below}
(3) sharing the printer on another PC and connecting to the share
(4) downloading and attempting installation of the HP printing system for
the 4200n {see Error (3) below}
(5) restarted system and retried
(6) confirmed administrator has full rights to the system
(7) checked for viruses and spyware

Error messages:
(1) Printer driver was not installed. Operation could not be completed.
(2) Unable to install HP Laserjet 2200 Series PCL, Windows 2000 or XP, Intel
driver. Operation could not be completed.
(3) The hp Laserjet 4200 setup program has encountered a severe error and
will now exit. Restart your computer and run setup again.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Look for a file in C:\windows called setupapi.log
This file may have information as to why the setup is failing.
To make it easier, rename the file setupapi.log and then try to install the
printer. This will create a new setupapi file with only the information
pertaining to your printer.
