cannot install 56k modem

Hi

I need some advice here.
I just replaced a 3-year motherboard for my WinXP Home PC. The
replacement was fine. Everything runs fine, except I cannot connect to
the internet. I'm using dial-up. Each time I click "Dial", the computer
crashes, and I have to manually reboot (using GoBack to prevent errors)

I thought I had to reinstall my internal modem, because I replaced the
motherboard. So I did. Still couldn't connect, and crashed as well.

Went to a local PC shop, and asked for advice. Told me to try moving
the modem to a separate PCI slot. So I did. Then when I turned on the
computer, under Device Manager it told 'Unknown Device'. My modem
wasn't in the device list anymore, so it must be my modem, estranged by
the system :(

I tried installing the modem using the CD, but it won't recognize the
unknown device as a modem, and refused to install the driver. ('No
drivers were found')

Tried to move it back to the original PCI slot, and didn't change a
thing. Now I'm left with no working modems, and couldn't connect at all
:'(

I really appreciate any help I can get. Thanks

Jonathan

could be that the modem is simply uncompatible. a) First go into your bios
setup and see if you got to engage full duplex; maybe you should also jot
down the com port assigned by bios too; maybe the pci slot needs to be
engaged there too.

b)then you probably need to go to the manufacturer site and see if you need
an updated driver.

c) next you should see if the pci board has a tiny switch for the irq and or
com port. between the board, windows device manager and the bios settings,
the irq and com port should match....

d) you can also run windows help and support and get a detail report on your
system. i think its referred to as system info. take a look at the conflicts
reported, etc.....

ps: if the board came wih your previous motherboard, it may not work with
your new motherboard...
