Cannot get VPN working...

Hello all,
I cannot get Windows XP VPN to work and its been eating at me past month as
i have tried everything.

VPN uses auto DHCP to assign address,
I set up PPTP Passthrough('GRE') on DLink WBR-2310 router,
forwarded port 1723 to my computer (as well as others be4),
and i setup the VPN client connection set to use PPTP to connect,
Windows Firewall is off, no firewall is running on my machine, turned off my
antivirus.
The user can connect locally within network, from another computer or even
my computer, but not from outside network.
tried almost every setting on client and server.

When trying to connect from outside the network (or even me connecting to
the Verizon WAN ip from my computer inside the network), i get stuck
immediately at "Verifying Username and Password...".
Then in my Event Viewer i get this...

"Event ID: 20049
The user connected to port VPN4-0 has been disconnected because the
authentication process did not complete within the required amount of time."

it seems based on a few networking tools i used, that a connection IS
established over 1723 between my computer and external computers IP, but
something just doesn't happen after that.

anyone have an idea?
tried using this page as a guide:
http://www.chicagotech.net/casestudy/Evenid20049.htm
didnt really help.
btw, Im not on a domain.

Thanks for any help,
Arian

"forwarded port 1723 to my computer (as well as others be4)" Did you tried other 4 computers before? Any way, can you telnet port 1723 from outside?
